Overview
Oltre(Beyond) is a visual storytelling project that explores the perceptual world of Marco, a visually impaired young man from Como, using water as a central metaphor.
Despite his limited sight, Marco inspired the concept with his curiosity, honesty, and emotional depth. The project reflects his evolving self-awareness, shaped by both fragility and inner strength. Water serves as a symbol of his journey, from confusion to self-acceptance, mirroring emotions and personal growth through its changing states. Inspired by the natural water cycle, the narrative transitions from solid to liquid, visually expressing the transformation of Marco's inner world. Photographs are created using analog filters, and the use of semi-transparent materials for text pages enhances the sensory experience, inviting the reader to step into Marco's unique perception of reality.
Marco suffers from low vision, a rare visual impairment that profoundly impacts his daily life and how he interacts with the world. The central challenge lies in finding a way to represent and communicate this internal, complex condition to people with normal sight, who often struggle to comprehend what living with such a unique visual reality actually feels like.
Oltre (Beyond) addresses this by translating Marco’s unique perceptual and emotional world into an immersive visual storytelling project centered on the metaphor of water and its natural cycle. By combining analog-filtered photography that visually mimics his altered perception with semi-transparent text pages that physically layer the narrative, the project allows sighted viewers to tangibly experience his journey from confusion to self-acceptance, bridging the gap between two different ways of seeing the world.
